During 2009, Deal Hospital in Kent began phase 1 of a refurbishment project for the replacement of existing sash sliding timber windows.
The original windows were installed during the construction of the Hospital in 1923. Although the general timber structure of the windows was still intact, the products were highly dated and featured single glazed units, paint damage and broken weight and pulley systems.
Deal Hospital began the search for a suitable product that would provide a similar high life expectancy. After consultation with an architect, the revolutionary Accoya timber species was brought to their attention.
Accoya Timber
Accoya is a high performance timber created from sustainably sourced softwood and features a high durability rating making this an ideal timber for Deal Hospital’s requirements.
The high performance timber Accoya undergoes a proprietary, non-toxic acetylation process that permanently modifies the wood to the core, resulting in a durable and environmentally friendly solid wood that matches or exceeds even the best tropic hardwood.
Our Solution
After receiving the initial lead via a tender list run by Accoya, Dempsey Dyer approached the NHS with details of their product range.
As Dempsey Dyer manufacture wooden window, door and conservatory products in a wide variety of timbers, they were able to offer one of the most comprehensive product ranges currently available on the marketplace today.
The Dempsey V traditional sash slider was recommended to the Hospital based on its high performance and high quality design/specification.
The product features a ball race pulley system and English brass ironmongery which helps to create a smoothly operating and highly durable product.
Dempsey Dyer’s own drainage system allows any moisture ingress to ventilate to the outside, providing increased durability and life expectancy.
Phase 1
Dempsey Dyer won the first phase of the contract in December 2008 which was completed in March 2009 for the manufacture and supply of 91 box sash sliding timber windows. The chosen specification featured the innovative Accoya timber, structural Georgian bar, double glazed units and a white finish to both sides.
Phase 2
The quality of the products supplied on phase 1 impressed the client to the extent that Dempsey Dyer were chosen once again for the supply and manufacture of timber box sash sliding windows on the second phase of the refurbishment project.
This time, working through the main contractor ‘EPPS Construction’, 103 box sash sliding timber windows were supplied during the first half of 2011 for a clinic on the same site.
Building Relationships
Through working with EPPS Construction, Dempsey Dyer has secured an additional large contract (unrelated to Deal Hospital). EPPS Construction chose Dempsey Dyer for this contract based on the quality of their products and services as experienced on the Deal Hospital contract.
